Flirting With Uncertainty: Feelings, Boundaries, and Contexts

Overview

Flirting is part of our everyday life, inside and outside of the therapy room, both in our personal and professional lives. The concept that can be instinctively linked together with flirting is uncertainty. This process-oriented workshop will explore multidimensional, cultural, and universal elements of flirting. Is flirting a romantic deception, a sexual invitation, or another kind of playful and positive force? What is the purpose of flirting? How aware are we of our flirting and what we seek from it? What cultural and societal values do we put on flirting? How do we understand flirting in our practice and in our own lives considering its contextual nuances? What is the distinction between flirting and sexual harassment?

In this workshop, taking into account cultural perspectives, we will develop practical steps for clinicians to understand and articulate both the devastation flirting may cause and the positive force it may bring forth for clients.

Drawing from philosophers, theorists, and songwriters along with clinical vignettes and audiovisual materials, we will discuss participants’ experiences with flirtation and the feelings those experiences evoke. We will also develop strategies for setting boundaries.

Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Define at least three contextual elements of flirting
2. Identify at least two of their own assumptions and/or discomforts about flirting
3. Describe at least two ways to set boundaries

Presenters

	Anni Tuikka (dba Anna Kaye), MA, LPC, NCC, CPCS, CST-S Ms. Tuikka is a licensed psychotherapist (LPC) and a certified sex therapist (CST) as well as a certified supervisor of sex therapists (CSTS) and professional counselors (CPCS). She is also trained in trauma therapies (BSP and EMDR), which she uses when working with sexual or other trauma. She is in private practice at Anna Kaye Associates, Inc. where she treats individuals and couples whether they are in conventional or unconventional relationships or not in relationships at all. 	Edurne Paula Chopeitia, MA, NCC, APC Ms. Chopeitia is an Associate Professional Counselor and a National Certified Counselor. She provides individual, couples, and sex therapy services in English and Spanish at Anna Kaye Associates and the Counseling Institute of Atlanta. She is a candidate at the Emory University Psychoanalytic Institute (EUPI). Ms. Chopeitia’s main clinical interest is to help clients understand how they love, work, and play in the relational spaces created in person, online, and in fantasies.
